Supplementary Rule Updates | Helmets & SkiGP 4S Engines

08/07/2023

The NZJSBA Executive Committee has chosen to update and introduce new supplementary rules for the coming 23/24 season. These are effective immediately.

Helmet Colouring

Supplementary Regulation 19 regarding Helmet standards has been updated to include text specifying that there must be a significant level of appropriate colouring on all helmets used in competition. The aim is to ensure that a rider’s helmet is as visible as possible against the backdrop of water and thus make it easier for oncoming riders to spot a downed rider in front of them.

The committee has set that a “significant level of appropriate colouring” will mean to be at least approximately 50% of the helmet will be covered in high-vis colour and that this colour must be fluorescent in either Yellow, Orange, Red, Magenta/Pink, or Green tone (Blue is not acceptable). There are also some specifics on the painting of helmets as this can deteriorate the physical construction of the helmet in some instances.

All helmets used must meet the above criteria. If your current helmet does not meet the criteria, the Executive Committee suggest either looking at applying fluorescent coloured vinyl (i.e. signwriters vinyl) to bring it up to spec, or potentially look at upgrading your helmet to one that has colouring to meet the new criteria. The race director at any sanctioned event will have the facility to prohibit the use of a helmet that doesn’t meet the new criteria.

If you want to ensure if your current helmet or potential new helmet meets the new criteria, please get in touch with the NZJSBA Office (info@nzjetsport.org.nz) in the first instance to discuss.

Ski GP - Eligibility & Displacement

The Executive Committee has agreed on updates regarding the use of the engine platform from the Kawasaki SXR 1500 in aftermarket hulls in the Ski GP class. The decision has been made to allow the use of the Kawasaki 1500cc engine from the SXR 1500 (or any 4S engine above 1100cc) in an aftermarket hull (of no more than 97in). When using a 4S engine above 1100cc the engine must conform to the Ski Stock ruleset. To further clarify, the “engine” means the long block including the intake, exhaust and associated ignition/electronics – all must conform to the Ski Stock rules.
